Age information

To drive our vehicles, all drivers need to be at least 21 years old and have held a full, valid driving licence for at least 1 year at the start of your rental. 

If you or any of your drivers are under 24 when you pick up the vehicle, you will each have to pay a young driver surcharge. 

To rent vehicles of vehicle category H, J, M, N, L minimum age is 24 years old.

Driver's License (Physical)

All drivers must bring all parts of their valid driving licence with them. The driving licence documents must be valid for driving the rented vehicle in Croatia.

 

Driver/renter must posses a driving licence for at least one year.

 

You must bring:

The credit card that was used to make your booking or another credit card under your name.
Photo ID featuring a recognisable photo taken in the last 10 years.

We will accept your passport or driving licence if it contains a photo, a national identity card or any other form of government-issued identification.

Debit card

Debit cards are not accepted.

Additional Drivers

Yes, but only if we have approved them. You may not let anyone drive the vehicle who hasn’t been approved by us.

This shall not apply if, through no fault of your own, you are unable to drive the vehicle and the vehicle must be driven to prevent an imminent danger (e.g., if you’re in a medical emergency and you need to be taken to the hospital).

We charge a fee for every Additional Driver we allow to drive the vehicle. HRK 68,00 per day, HRK 408,00 per week, HRK 680,00 maximum. All costs are taxable.

Yes, some rental locations offer an out of hours pick-up service where you can collect the vehicle and any optional extras outside the rental location’s normal opening hours.
The out of hours pick up fee is HRK 300,00 (taxable).

Hold Amount

When the car is pick up, Avis will require a credit card owned by the lessee and with an available limit to place a hold on a specific amount. The amount may vary depending on the car category and rental period, and it serves as a guarantee for Avis. This amount is not charged or deducted from your invoice; rather, it is temporarily retained throughout the duration of the car rental.

 

Upon returning the vehicle to Avis in the same condition as when it was collected, the company has up to 72 hours to request the release of the blocked amount on your card. The time it takes to release the hold varies depending on your credit card operator.

Security Deposit Value

Amount established by Avis in the rental agreement. This amount will serve as a guarantee in case of any unforeseen circumstances, ensuring funds available to cover extra costs. It will be released after the car is returned.

 

For rates with full coverage (Super See Europe), the amount to be blocked will be approximately EUR 250.
 

For rates with partial coverage (See Europe), the amount to be blocked will be the amount of the deductible, which varies depending on the selected category (between EUR 1125 and EUR 5375).

Accident management fee

If you are involved in an accident, or the vehicle, key, accessory, a vehicle document or an extra is damaged, lost or stolen, you must complete a damage report form and in the case of an accident also the European Accident Statement report form correctly and in full and send it to us as soon as possible, but at the latest within seven days.

If you do not send us the damage report form or the European Accident Statement report form within seven days following the accident, loss or theft, a processing fee for our additional work amounting up to HRK 1.400,00 (taxable) will be levied, insofar as you are culpably responsible for the fact that we have not received a properly completed damage/accident report form within seven days.

The payment of this processing fee does not, however, indemnify you from the obligation to submit to us the properly completed damage report form or the European Accident Statement report form.

Smoke free cars

It is strictly forbidden to smoke in the vehicles.
If we believe anyone has smoked in the vehicle during the rental period, a special dry-cleaning charge will apply.

Important

Avis and Avis licensees reserve the right to refuse any request for rental including requests for persons under age, persons not in possession of a recognized full and valid driver's license, persons unable to satisfy credit or cash requirements, or persons who, in the opinion of Avis, constitute a risk.

Insurances & Coverages

CDW - Collition Damage Waiver

If you have a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and the vehicle, keys, any accessories or any vehicle documents are damaged or lost through your own fault or that of any of your additional drivers or passengers, the amount you have to pay for the damage will be reduced to no more than the excess stated on your rental agreement, meaning you’ll pay for the damage plus a damage processing fee of HRK 380,00 (taxable).

In most cases, Damage Waiver is provided with the vehicle as standard.

If it is included, this will be shown or disclosed to you before completing your booking and stated on your rental agreement, as well as in your booking confirmation email.

If it isn’t included, you can buy it separately.

TP - Theft Protection

If you have Theft Protection (TP) and the vehicle is stolen or lost through your own fault or that of any of your additional drivers or passengers, the amount you have to pay will be reduced to no more than the excess stated on your rental agreement, meaning you’ll pay for the damage plus a processing fee of HRK 380,00 (taxable).

SCDW - Super Collition Damage Waiver

Super CDW reduces the excess you would pay if the vehicle is damaged.

Yes, any agreed Damage Waiver or Super Collision Damage Waiver shall not apply, and the amount of your liability shall not be reduced, if:

The damage, theft, or loss was caused by the wilful act or gross negligence of you or any of your additional drivers or passengers.

At the time of the accident, the vehicle’s driver did not have a valid driving licence or if the driver’s ability to drive was impaired by alcohol, drugs or similar.

You culpably breached your obligation to send us an incident report and an accident report , or your obligation to notify the police , and thus made it significantly more difficult or impossible for us to ascertain the cause of the accident, the amount of damage, or the fault of the parties involved in the accident.

The damage did not occur during the rental period agreed with us (i.e., particularly in the case of the vehicle’s late return).

The damage occurred while driving abroad without our authorisation.

PAI - Personal Accident Insurance

Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) covers the driver of the vehicle in the event of an accident.
Personal Accident Insurance provides the following benefits:

A maximum of HRK 40.000,00 in the event of death.
A maximum of HRK 80.000,00 in the event of permanent total disability.

You can buy it at our rental stations.
The price per day is HRK 55,00 (taxable).

You can buy Personal Accident Insurance no matter what vehicle you rent.

Additional charges

Cleaning fee

If the interior of the vehicle is especially muddy, dirty, stained or smelly, and our standard cleaning procedure will not fix it, you will be charged a Specialist Cleaning Charge in amount of HRK 562,50

Fuel and Electricity Charges

You will pay a one-off fee. This fee includes the cost of a full tank of fuel, plus the cost of us refueling the vehicle for you.
We will not reimburse you for non-used fuel unless you return the vehicle with a full tank.

No, if you want to take Fuel Up Front, you must ask for it during the booking process or when you pick up the vehicle.

Pay on Return will apply if you:

Don’t buy Fuel Up Front.
Don’t return the vehicle with a full tank.

You pay for fuel based on the factory-installed fuel gauge.
We calculate the price by rounding down the fuel level to the nearest eighth (1/8) of a tank.
We charge market price per litre of missing fuel plus tax plus refuling charge in amount of HRK 350,00 (taxable).

Additional information

Late / Early return charge

If you return the vehicle late without our prior agreement, you will be charged an extra day’s rental plus a late return fee of HRK 112,00 (taxable) for each day or part of a day you are late.

Amended Return Station
If the car is returned to a station other than agreed - outside the same city - at time of Check Out and noted in the Rental Agreement, an amended return fee of HRK 350,00 HRK (taxable) is being charged for the additional fleet disposition cost.

One Way rentals

Yes, some rental locations let you collect the vehicle and any optional extras from one rental location – and return them to another.

The price depends on the rental location. If you want to pick up the vehicle and return it to a different location in the same country, you can expect it to be between HRK 300,00 and HRK 1.000,00 (taxable).

If you want to pick up the vehicle in Croatia and drop it off in another country, you can expect the cost to be between HRK 1.000,00 and HRK 15.500,00 (taxable).

The exact price for this will be either shown or disclosed to you before completing your booking and stated on your rental agreement. Please be informed that this fee is mandatory for local one way rentals as well as international one way rentals.

You can request a one-way rental when you book – or you can ask for it when you get to the rental location.
If you asked for a one-way rental when you booked, the fee will be included in your rental price.

You will be charged a one-way fee at the ‘pay at location’ tariff valid on the day you return the vehicle.

Delivery and collection

Some of our rental locations offer a Delivery Service where we drop the vehicle – and any optional extras you pre-booked – off at a time and place you request.

The vehicle delivery fee depends on where you’re renting and where the vehicle is beingdelivered to – but you can expect it to be between HRK 150,00 and HRK 300,00 (taxable).

Where a Delivery Service is available please give us 24 hours’ notice that you would like us to deliver the vehicle to you.

Some of our rental locations offer a Collection Service where we collect the vehicle – and any optional extras you rented – at a time and place you request.

We charge an additional fee for collecting the vehicle.
The fee for this depends on where you’re renting and where the vehicle is being collected from – but you can expect it to be between HRK 150,00 and HRK 300,00 (taxable).

Where a Collection Service is available please give us 24 hours’ notice when you want the vehicle collected.

Fines and charges

The customer is responsible for all fines and charges issued because of you or your additional drivers using the vehicle.

Fines and charges could include:

All parking fines or charges
Toll charges
Towing charges
Clamping costs
Traffic fines or charges
Speeding fines
And any other charges or fines

If a fine or charge is sent to us because you have not paid a charge or complied with the law, we will take payment for:

Our administration fee of HRK 312,50 for each fine or charge issued, which will be charged in the currency of the country where the fine occurred.
Plus, the fine or charge if we must pay it Cleaning fee.

Driving restrictions

Cross the border

For travelling outside Croatia special conditions apply.

You are not allowed to use the vehicle in:

Albania
Bulgaria
Georgia
FYR Macedonia
Kosovo
Turkey
Greece
Russia
Ukraine
Romania
Moldavia
Belarus
Lithuania
Latvia

It is allowed to travel to:

Bosnia and Herzegovina
Serbia
Montenegro

However there is mandatory charge in amount of HRK 500,00 (taxable) for Cross border insurance. The Cross border insurance is insurance for countries which are not part of EU and are considered higher risk countries.


Travel into Switzerland: All vehicles driving on Swiss highways must purchase a special tax sticker (Swiss Hwy. Sticker). Cost is and is available for purchase at the border crossings. Customer is subject to a fine of SFR 100.00 if caught without the sticker.

Travel into Austria: All vehicles driving in Austria must have a Toll Sticker that can be purchased at the border. The Toll Sticker is available for specified length of use, with a minimum one-day purchase. Fines for neglecting to purchase the Toll sticker start at EUR 200.00.

Travel into France: Any car entering France must have two breathalyzer kits. Driver not having them in the car will be liable to a fine. The kits can be purchased at petrol stations. It is advisable to buy them before crossing the border with France.

Circulation restrictions

There are toll roads and toll bridges which require you to pay a fee if you wish to use them.
If you do not pay these charges before you use such roads or bridges, you will incur a fine, which you will be responsible for paying.

Optional services and equipment

Child Safety Seats

Yes, we offer baby, child and boosters seats.

A baby seat is typically suitable for a child from birth to 12 months old and weighing no more than 13 kilos.

An infant seat is typically suitable for a child aged 9 months to 4 years old and weighing between 9 and 18 kilos.

A child seat is typically suitable for a child aged 4 to 11 years old and weighing between 15 and 36 kilos.

A booster seat is typically suitable for a child aged 8 to 11 years old and weighing between 20 and 45 kilos.

Please remember that it is always your responsibility to place the child seat and to check whether the seat is fitted correctly before you drive away.

All charges are taxable.

If the seat is damaged, lost or stolen, you are responsible for the cost of the replacement, unless you were not culpable for the damage, loss or theft and/or it was not due to your fault or to that of your passengers or additional drivers.

GPS

The fee for renting a GPS is HRK 105,00 per day (taxable).
If the GPS device is damaged, lost or stolen, you are responsible for the cost of the replacement, unless you were not culpable for the damage, loss or theft and/or it was not due to your fault or to that of your passengers or additional drivers.

Mobile Wi-Fi

Avis offer Mobile Wi-Fi devices.
The fee for renting WiFi device is HRK 68,00 per day (taxable).

If the mobile Wi-Fi device is damaged, lost or stolen, you are responsible for the cost of the replacement, unless you were not culpable for the damage, loss or theft and/or it was not due to your fault or to that of your passengers or additional drivers.

If the SIM card or an accessory part of the mobile Wi-Fi device is damaged, lost or stolen, you are responsible for the cost of the replacement, unless you were not culpable for the damage, loss or theft and/or it was not due to your fault or to that of your passengers or additional drivers.

Please note: the device can be only used on territory of Croatia.
