The amount of the pre-authorization or security deposit is calculated based on the estimated vehicle rental price plus the estimated price of all optional extras the renter requested, less any amount that the customer has prepaid towards the rental – for example, the cost of any accepted voucher.

TPL - Third Party Liability

Third Party Liability (TPL) cover is provided with the vehicle as standard. This means that if the renter has an accident in our vehicle and he injures someone, including any of his passengers, or he damages anything which belongs to them, he will not have to pay any of their costs. Third Party Liability cover does not cover any death or injury suffered by the driver of our vehicle or any damage to personal items in our vehicle.

If the law requires us to provide renter with third party liability cover, the minimum cover required by law will still apply but we, or our insurer, may seek to recover our costs from the renter if the accident was caused by:

By the renter breaking the contract (for example allowing someone we had not approved drive the vehicle of driving whilst under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any other unlawful substance).
By the renter breaking the law.
As a result of the renter’s negligence or recklessness.
Please ask Avis about conditions, limits and costs.

TP - Theft Protection

If Theft Protection (TP) is not purchased or is not included in the rate, in case of theft the customer will be responsible for the total value of the rental car, keys, any accessories and any vehicle documents plus our loss of use and an administrative fee.

If a liability reduction for the event of theft (TP) is purchased and the vehicle is stolen, the amount that the renter will have to pay will be limited to the excess stated on the rental agreement plus a fee for the processing of the event of damage or theft.

If any optional extras are lost or stolen, the renter will have to pay for the cost of replacement in addition to the rental fee.

SCDW - Super Collition Damage Waiver

Super Damage Waiver (SCDW) is an excess reduction product which reduces the excess to zero except for vans in case of accidental damage to the rented car. Renter can purchase this coverage when starting the rental if it is not included in the rate.

What happens if the customer damages any optional rented extras?
If any optional extras are damaged, renter has to pay for the cost of replacement, or their estimated repair costs in addition to the rental fee.

Are there any times when the excess would not apply?
The amount that renter pays will not be reduced if the damage was caused deliberately or by gross negligence – or as a result of:

Water or fire damage that was not your fault.
Driving the vehicle without due care and attention.
Driving or using the vehicle in breach of your contract.
Breaching a contractual obligation (for example not calling the police in the event of a damage)

What does renter have to pay if the excess does not apply or if he doesn´t have Damage Waiver?
If the vehicle, keys, any accessories or any vehicle documents are damaged during your rental, you’ll have to pay:

Either the cost of replacement, or the estimated repair costs – whichever is cheaper.

Additional charges

Fuel and Electricity Charges

The vehicle will normally be supplied with a full tank of fuel. Renter must return it to us with the same amount of fuel it had in it when he picked it up – usually a full tank – as shown on the factory-installed fuel gauge.
We recommend to fill up as close to the return location as possible on the return date, and keep the receipt to show us. If customer does not return the vehicle with a full tank – and he can’t show us a receipt for fuel – we will charge him.

Fuel Options

FUEL UP FRONT: renter can pay for a full tank of fuel, based on the manufacturer's stated fuel tank capacity for the rented vehicle – plus our costs of refueling the vehicle. Then renter just returns the vehicle with whatever’s left in the tank (even if it’s virtually empty) so long as the engine still runs. If renter wants to buy Fuel Up Front, he must ask for and buy it at time of rental.

How do I calculate the cost of Fuel Up Front?
Depending on the rental location, we charge the average fuel price at the start of the rental period –However, customer does not get a refund for any fuel you don’t use.

If renter drives less than 120 kilometers Avis will apply EZ fuel?
Often the fuel gauges stills look “full” so Avis asks customers to fill up the tank near to the return location and show a copy of the receipt when returning the vehicle. If the customer doesn’t have time to fill up the tank, or can’t show a receipt, Avis will apply EZ Fuel to cover refueling costs.

PAY ON RETURN will apply if renter has driven more than 120 kilometers and:

Doesn`t buy Fuel Up Front.
Doesn´t return the vehicle with a full tank.

He will pay for fuel based on the factory-installed fuel gauge rounded down to the nearest eighth (1/8) of a tank. This is based on the manufacturer’s stated fuel tank capacity.

We charge between 1.5 and three times the average fuel price at the end of the rental period plus a service fee.
This charge covers Avis cost of driving to the nearest petrol station at short notice, and potentially delaying the next customer’s rental.

Additional information

Late / Early return charge

If customer wants to extend the rental he should contact us as soon as possible. At the latest, this should be before the end date and time on the rental agreement. Extra days will be charged at ‘pay at location’ prices.

If customer fails to extend the rental and is late returning the vehicle, Avis will charge him for an extra day’s rental plus a late return administration fee for each day or part of a day until the vehicle is returned.

If renter fails to extend the rental and is late returning the vehicle, Avis will on the third day after the agreed return date pre-authorize payment for an additional 10 days’ rental charge on the customer’s credit card, at “pay at location' prices.
If he returns the vehicle within those 10 days, he will only be charged for the actual rental days, plus any other charges he owes Avis.

If customer fails to return the vehicle as agreed, Avis will also charge him a late return administration fee for each day or part of a day until the vehicle is returned.

One Way rentals

Some rental locations let renters collect the vehicle and any optional extras from one rental location and return them to another.

The price depends on the rental location and the car group rented. If renter wants to pick up the vehicle and return it to a different location in France, an additional fee applies.

The cost will be informed when making a reservation.

Driving restrictions

Cross the border

Avis cars rented in France are permitted outside of borders, with restrictions.

Renters are covered by third party liability insurance only when they use the vehicles in the country listed on the insurance green card. Additional coverages only apply when the vehicles are used in the countries listed below.

Renters are only allowed to use the vehicle in the following countries:

Andorra
Austria
Belgium
Denmark
Spain (continental)
Germany
Finland
Northern Ireland
Italy
Luxemburg
Norway
Netherlands
Portugal
United Kingdom
Sweden
Switzerland

Travel into Switzerland: All vehicles driving on Swiss highways must purchase a special tax sticker (Swiss Hwy. Sticker). Cost is SFR 40.00 and is available for purchase at the border crossings. Customer is subject to a fine of SFR 100.00 if caught without the sticker.

Travel into Austria: All vehicles driving in Austria must have a Toll Sticker that can be purchased at the border. The Toll Sticker is available for specified length of use, with a minimum one-day purchase. Fines for neglecting to purchase the Toll sticker start at EUR 200.00

Travel into Italy: Mercedes vehicles cannot be driven into Italy.

Circulation restrictions

Certain areas have congestion charging zones meaning renter needs to pay a fee if he wishes to drive in certain areas, on certain days and during certain times. In addition, there are toll roads and toll bridges which require to pay to use them. If customer does not pay these charges before he enters such areas or use such roads or bridges, he will incur a fine.

We recommend checking the Internet to find out about any restricted areas before traveling. Websites such as Urbana Access Regulations provide useful information. If the rental location is in or near a restricted area, we will tell customer about it when he picks up the vehicle. We are unable to tell him about any other restricted areas.

If the seat is damaged, lost or stolen, renter will have to pay for a replacement.

Customers with disabilities

Budget France does not currently offer specially adapted vehicles nor hand controls or panoramic mirrors in their vehicles at this time.

GPS

Most Avis locations offer GPS. The fee for renting a GPS will depend on the rental location. If the GPS is damaged, lost or stolen, renter will have to pay for a replacement.

Please note: In some countries, including France, it is against the law to use a GPS that tells where speed cameras are. It is illegal in France. If you rent a GPS from Avis, it won’t give you speed camera information.

Mobile Wi-Fi

Avis France offers Mobile Wi-Fi devices. We provide this service on behalf of a third party, so renter will need to read and agree to separate terms and conditions with them. Avis will provide these terms and conditions at the rental location.

The fee for hiring mobile Wi-Fi will depend on the rental location, but it is usually EUR 10.00 a day on top of the hire fee.

If the sim card or any mobile Wi-Fi accessories are damaged, lost or stolen, renter will have to pay for a replacement.
The costs of this are expected to range between EUR 5.00 and EUR 15.00 plus the rental costs.

Please note: In many countries, including France, it is illegal to drive while using a handheld mobile phone, tablet or other communications device. It is customers’ responsibility to drive safely and according to the laws of the country they are driving in.

Winter equipment

If the rental location customer is hiring from is in an area where it’s illegal to drive without all- weather tyres at certain times of year, the vehicle will automatically be supplied with them – and the fee will be included in the rental fee or contract.

Renter can also opt to book a vehicle equipped with all-weather tyres, and the fee will be included in the rental fee or contract.

If the rental location customer is hiring from is in an area where it’s illegal to drive without Snow Chains or all-weather tyres at certain times of year, the vehicle will automatically be supplied with snow chains – and the fee will be included in the rental fee. He can ask not to have these but we recommend taking either snow chains or all-weather tyres at these locations.

Snow chains are also available in some other rental locations. The fee for snow chains depends on the rental location.

If any snow chain is damaged, lost or stolen, renter will have to pay for a replacement pair.

Some rental locations offer Ski Racks.

Ski racks can’t be fitted to all our vehicles, so customer might need to upgrade if he needs one. This may increase the price of the vehicle and any excess he would have to pay.

If the ski rack is damaged, lost or stolen, renter will have to pay for a replacement. The costs of this are based on the replacement value and based on experience, it is usually about EUR 250.00 and EUR 500.00, on top of the hire fee.

Please give us at least 24 hours’ notice if you want to hire a ski rack.
