Age information

The minimum age is 25 years.

At corporate and participating licensee locations in Canada, Budget will rent to customers between the ages of 21-24 with a valid credit card and driver’s license.
There is a CAD 25.00 per day underage surcharge for renters 21-24.

Additionally, the following restrictions will also apply for renters between the ages of 21-24: Renters of luxury cars, mini-van, 12-passenger vans, specialty cars, standard SUV’s, full size SUV’s and premium SUV’s will not be permitted.

In the Province of Quebec, the minimum age policy for all renters is 21 years with and under age fee of CAD 25.00 per day.

In the Province of Saskatchewan, the minimum age policy for all renters is 18 years and there is no underage fee.

Minimum age and underage surcharges can vary at licensee locations.

Budget accepts most major credit cards as credit identification at time of rental including:

Please note that the credit card must have the renter's name and numbers embossed on it.

 

Physical credit cards that are not close to their expiration date must be presented; otherwise, delivery of the vehicle may be refused.

Debit cards are not accepted.

Some locations may not accept each of the referenced cards.

Driver's License (Physical)

A valid driver’s license from the country of residence and passport are required.

An International driving permit is also required for licenses with a non-roman alphabet.

Renters who have indicated a country of residence outside of the United States or Canada will also be required to present a return airline ticket at the time of rental.

In addition to the driver’s license, customers renting vehicle groups W (Standard SUV), L (Full Size SUV), Z (Premium SUV) and all Group X (Specialty Vehicles) must also produce a credit card in their own name and they must be able to show another piece of identification, foreign passport that meets the requirements, credit card other than the one being used for payment of rental in customer's name.

Debit card

Debit cards are not accepted at time of rental as credit identification.

Additional Drivers

All additional drivers must meet the same age, credit card, driving license and identification requirements as the renter.

An additional driver fee will apply (CAD 12.00 per day per driver at most Canadian locations).

Hold Amount

At the time of rental, corporate locations will request an authorization on your charge card for the estimated rental charges plus 20 percent  or a minimum of CAD 750.00 whichever is greater. 

 

At licensee locations, the hold amount may vary and will be determined based on rate, car group, length of rental and miscellaneous charges.

 

 While this hold is in place the funds will not be available for your use. When the rental is over, we will process the reversal but the bank may take time to post it back to the account.

Important

Budget and Budget licensees reserve the right to refuse any request for rental including requests for persons under age, persons not in possession of a recognized full and valid driver's license, persons unable to satisfy credit or cash requirements, or persons who, in the opinion of Budget, constitute a risk.

Insurances & Coverages

LDW - Loss Damage Waiver

Acceptance of Loss Damage Waiver reduces the renter and authorized additional driver’s responsibility to CAD 300.00 or CAD 500.00 for loss of, or damage to the Budget car, when they comply with the terms and conditions listed on the rental document jacket.

At the time of rental the customer must initial whether he/she accepts or declines the LDW and optional services.
LDW and optional services must be signed for at the rental counter.
LDW is taxable.

If LDW is not accepted, the customer is financially responsible for the full value of:

Accident Damage.
Glass Damage.
Stolen items (radio, battery, etc.)
Vandalism.
Theft of the car.

Loss of Use.
The customer may also be responsible for reimbursing Budget for the revenue lost by not being able to use the car while it is being repaired or not recovered due to theft (referred to as Loss of Use).

TPL - Third Party Liability

Public Liability covers injury or death to a third party (persons outside the Budget vehicle).
Property Damage covers damage to property other than the Budget vehicle and the renter’s, driver’s or passenger’s property.

Depending on the location Budget will provide primary, secondary or no coverage up to the minimum limits required by law in that state.
The Rental Document will state what type of coverage is provided.

SLI - Supplemental Liability Insurance

Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI) provides additional protection for bodily injury or death and property damage, in addition to the limits provided with the rental, to raise the limit to one million dollars.
SLI may not be available at all locations.

PAE - Personal Accident & Effects Insurance

PAE provides the renter and occupants of the Budget car with accidental death benefits and coverage for certain medical reasons.
Renters are protected both in and out of the rental vehicle throughout the entire rental period; occupants are covered only while in the Budget vehicle.
In addition, PAE provides protection against loss of or damage to certain personal property of the renter and individuals traveling with the renter.

PAE Benefits

Type of Coverage

Accidental Death – Renter USD 100,000 and Passengers USD 10,000.
Medical Coverage for Injuries – Renter or Passengers USD 3,500.
Ambulance Service – Renter or Passengers USD 250.
Personal Property Benefits - The maximum coverage per individual is USD 600 per claim with a maximum coverage of USD 1,800 for all individuals combined. A deductible of USD 25 per person will apply.

Some types of personal effects are not covered under this policy check with rental location or reservations for exceptions.

Additional charges

Fuel and Electricity Charges

The vehicle is rented with a full tank of gas and must be returned with a full tank of gas or there will be a charge for refueling. If customer refuels he should keep the receipt for verification purposes.

Most locations offer a prepaid gas option to purchase a full tank at market value which allows the customer to return the vehicle without a full tank of gas. There is no refund for unused gas.

If the vehicle is driven less than 125 kilometers there may be an additional refueling fee unless a gas receipt is presented at the time of return.
The customer can check at the time of rental for complete details.

e-Tolls

Please be aware of roads that may be “cashless tolls” and drivers on these roads are not able to pay cash once they have entered these roads.


Renters can automatically opt into our e-Toll service program and will be charged CAD 17.00 plus GST/HST per rental, plus incurred tolls at the maximum prevailing rates posted by the toll authority.

The charges may take 4-8 weeks after the rental to be billed to your credit card on file.

Additional information

Late / Early return charge

If customer wants to extend the rental or wish to return the vehicle to a different location he should contact us as soon as possible.
At the latest, this should be before the end date and time on the rental agreement. He will be advised whether the change is possible and any additional costs when he calls.

If customer fails to extend the rental and is late returning the vehicle, Budget will charge him the prevailing pay at location prices for the extra days as well as a late return administration fee of CAD 10.00 for each day or part of a day until the vehicle is returned.

If customer returns the vehicle to a different location, then he agreed to at time of rental the rate could default to a different rate available on the day he returns the vehicle and a one-way fee will be applied.

One Way rentals

Based on availability one-way rentals are allowed between cities within Canada.
A one-way fee may apply.

Driving restrictions

Cross the border

At corporate and participating licensee locations vehicles can be driven throughout the Canadian provinces and the Continental U.S. with no restrictions.
One-way rentals may be allowed based on vehicle availability.

The locations below have driving restriction exceptions to the above policy.

If traveling in Alberta, rates with unlimited kilometers will have a 20.00 per day surcharge. Travel to, or within any other province is strictly prohibited. Customers driving within other provinces will be charged CAD 0.50 per km, for every km driven, during the entire rental.
Note: 8 passenger and 15 passenger vans are only available for travel with British Columbia.

Travel within United States:
Rates with unlimited kilometers are only available for travel within the state of Washington. If traveling within the states of Oregon or California rates with unlimited kilometers will have an additional charge of 20.00 per day for the entire rental. Travel to, or within any other state is strictly prohibited. Customers traveling within other states will be charged CAD 0.50 per km, for every km driven during the entire rental. Travel to Alaska is not permitted.

Mexico:
Travel into Mexico is not permitted.
British ColumbiaVictoriaUnlimited kilometers apply when driving in Victoria. If crossing a border (Canada or US) written permission must be obtained from the rental counter and there will be a mileage cap of 200 kms per day.
ManitobaWinnipeg15 passenger vans at this location are not allowed to travel within the United States.
NewfoundlandGoose BayTravel within Canada's Atlantic Provinces: No restrictions. Unlimited KM rates are only valid for travel within the Atlantic Provinces (New Brunswick NB, Newfoundland NF, Nova Scotia NS and Prince Edward Island PE).

Winter tires

Are mandatory on certain roads or the renter/driver may be ticketed by RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police).

Quebec: It is mandatory that all vehicles registered in the province of Quebec be equipped with winter tires during the winter months of December to March.
All rentals will be charges a daily Tire Management Fee for year-round tire maintenance.
The fee is subject to concession recovery fees, GST and QST.

All Other Provinces: Winter tire equipped vehicles may be available in the winter season for reservations at some locations.
Additional fees vary by location and car group.

RSN - Roadside Assistance

Extended Roadside Assistance offers fast, dependable rescue service for our renters for a daily charge. It is offered to our customers at time of rental and provides roadside assistance for lost keys and remote entry device lockouts, flat tire service, towing (if the vehicle is inoperable), jump starts and emergency fuel delivery (up to 3 gallons).

The cost of replacing a key for most vehicles is at least CAD 100.00. Locksmith charges range by area. In addition to the cost of keys, there is a tow charge or delivery fee that can range from CAD 50.00 to CAD 250.00 depending on the distance.

By accepting the Extended Roadside Assistance you won’t have to worry about incurring additional expense for the listed items while on the road.
